Who we are

Tropical Blend Plants is a plant nursery in Edmonton, Alberta. Our website is https://tropicalblendplants.com.

If you have any question about this policy or about the information we hold on you, contact us:

What we collect, and why

When you contact us

Our contact form collects your name, email address, phone number, subject and message. We use these only to answer you, and the message is emailed to our enquiries inbox.

When you book a session or a workshop

Our booking and workshop forms collect your name, email address, phone number, your preferred date and time, the number of guests, the workshop you have chosen, and any notes you add. We use these to arrange and confirm your booking, and the details are emailed to our bookings inbox.

When you subscribe to our newsletter

We collect your email address, and nothing else. We use it only to send you our newsletter. Every newsletter contains a way to unsubscribe, and you can also ask us to remove you at any time by emailing us.

When you place an order

To process an order we collect your name, billing and shipping address, email address, phone number, and the details of what you ordered. We use this to take payment, fulfil and deliver your order, and to keep the records that tax and accounting rules require us to keep.

We do not see or store your full card number. Card details are entered directly into our payment providers’ systems and are handled by them — see Who we share your information with below.

When you leave a comment

If you comment on our site, we collect what you type into the comment form, along with your IP address and browser user-agent string, which help us detect spam.

An anonymised string created from your email address — a hash — may be sent to the Gravatar service to check whether you have a profile picture there. Gravatar’s privacy policy is at https://automattic.com/privacy/. If your comment is approved, your profile picture is visible to the public alongside it.

When you simply visit

Like most websites, our hosting provider records ordinary server logs, including IP addresses, for security and troubleshooting. We also use Google Analytics, described below.

Cookies

We use cookies for the following purposes.

  • Shopping. WooCommerce sets cookies so your basket remembers what you put in it and so checkout works across pages. Without these the shop cannot function.
  • Analytics. Google Analytics sets cookies that help us understand which pages people visit and how they found us. See below.
  • Comments. If you leave a comment, you may choose to save your name, email address and website in cookies so you do not have to type them again. These last one year.
  • Logging in. If you have an account on the site, we set cookies to keep you signed in and to remember your display preferences. Login cookies last two days, or two weeks if you choose “Remember Me”. Screen-option cookies last a year. Logging out removes them.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. If you block the shopping cookies, the basket and checkout will not work.

Who we share your information with

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with the service providers we need in order to run the shop, and only as far as each one needs:

  • Stripe — processes card payments. Your card details go directly to Stripe. Their privacy policy is at https://stripe.com/privacy.
  • WooPayments (Automattic) — processes payments and related order information. See https://automattic.com/privacy/.
  • Google Analytics (Google LLC) — receives information about your visit, including a cookie identifier and IP address, so we can see how the site is used. Google’s privacy policy is at https://policies.google.com/privacy. You can opt out with Google’s browser add-on at https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
  • Akismet (Automattic) — checks comments and form submissions for spam. The submitted content, along with the IP address and browser user-agent, is sent to Akismet for that check.
  • Google Fonts — our pages load typefaces from Google’s font servers, which means your browser makes a request to Google and your IP address is visible to them in the process.
  • Hostinger — hosts this website and therefore stores the data described above on our behalf.

Some of these providers are based outside Canada, including in the United States, so your information may be stored or processed there and may be subject to the laws of those countries.

We may also disclose information where the law requires it, or where we need to establish or defend a legal claim.

How long we keep it

  • Order records are kept for as long as tax and accounting rules require, normally seven years.
  • Enquiries, bookings and workshop requests are kept for up to two years, so we can refer back to what was arranged.
  • Newsletter subscriptions are kept until you unsubscribe.
  • Comments and their metadata are kept indefinitely, so follow-up comments can be recognised and approved automatically rather than held in a queue.
  • Analytics data is kept according to Google’s retention settings for our property.

Your rights

Under Canadian privacy law — the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act and Alberta’s Personal Information Protection Act — you have the right to ask us what personal information we hold about you, to ask us to correct it if it is wrong, and to withdraw a consent you previously gave.

If you are in the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area, you also have rights to erasure, to restrict or object to processing, and to receive your data in a portable form.

To exercise any of these, email contact@tropicalblendplants.com. We will respond within 30 days. There are some things we cannot delete — records we are legally obliged to keep, such as completed order and tax records — and we will tell you if that applies.

If you are not satisfied with how we have handled your request, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada at https://www.priv.gc.ca, or to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta at https://www.oipc.ab.ca.

Children

This site is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has given us their information, contact us and we will delete it.

Security

This site is served over an encrypted connection (HTTPS), and card payments are handled entirely by our payment providers, so we never hold your full card details. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect what we hold.

Uploaded images

If you upload an image to this website, avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS), because visitors can download that image and extract the location from it.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top of this page. If the change is significant, we will say so on the site.
